Its countdown to all the fun of the fair
IT'S THAT time of year again - the 751st Ilkeston Charter Fair is coming to town to entertain the young and the young at heart.
The four-day funfair kicks off at 6pm on Wednesday, October 15th and runs until Saturday, October 18th.
Among the dodgems, waltzers and latest white knuckle rides there will be the opportunity to make yourself sick on candy floss and toffee apples.
The fair is organised every year by Erewash Borough Council and takes over Upper Bath Street, the Market Place, East Street, South Street, Queen Street, Wharncliffe Road and Pimlico with favourite attractions and rides.
The Mayor of Erewash Coun J Brian Smith will officially open the fair at 12pm on Thursday 16th October when he makes a speech and rings his bell as has been the tradition since 1931.
Coun David Stephenson, Erewash Borough Council's Lead Member for Leisure, said: "Anticipation is mounting for this prestigious event which evokes immense pride amongst the residents of Ilkeston.
"In addition, hordes of people from neighbouring areas flock every year to the fair for a piece of the action, which provides a significant boost to the local economy."
Showmen will begin arriving in Ilkeston on the Sunday prior to the fair and Extension Street, Club Row, Pimlico, Queen Street, East Street and South Street car parks will be closed to the public.
Extension Street and Club Row car parks will be closed from 12pm on Sunday, October 12th, while the other car parks will be closed from 9pm the next day. Town centre roads will be closed from 5am on Tuesday, October 14th.
